I’ve had a few requests for the camp stories that our son told when he got home last week. He had so many. I thought I’d share his favorite and mine.
Every day at camp they had some kind of outdoor learning activity. Our son enjoyed fishing for crawfish in the stream the best. The kids all had nets and waded out knee deep in the stream. They poked around in a large rock pile with the net handles and scooped up the crawfish as they moved away from the disturbance. He said he had two climb out of his net and jump back into the water. One wouldn’t leave the net and pinched everyone that tried to free it. He said one crawfish would turn and shoot itself off in the opposite direction every time someone got near it with a net. They named that one “Lightening”. Two weeks later he still talks about how much fun they had that afternoon.
Camp personnel also taught the kids to square dance, then they had a dance that night. How much patience does it take to teach 340 kids to square dance? You’d think they were in college the way our son talked about that dance. He said 30 boys and girls were “crushed” that night because their respective boyfriends and girlfriends dumped them for someone else. One of the boys in his cabin came back crying after his girlfriend dumped him. I’m talking pre-teens here. Our son said he asked one of the girls in his class to dance, but he didn’t mention dancing with anyone else. It all reminded me of dances at the local Youth Center when I was in high school.
It also reminded me that our little boy will soon cross that line and become a young man.
Our son also shared that the grounds include campsites that individuals can use during the summer and on the weekends. I doubt they have access to things like the reptile house, but campers would have access to the extensive grounds. If you live anywhere near central Ohio, you might want to check out their website. Maybe your child’s school or your group would like to schedule a trip there.
