I brought home some interesting ideas from the Chicago quilt show. For all the quilts I’ll mention here, the show prohibited photos.
Nancy Erickson had some animal pieces hanging in one exhibit. If you haven’t seen her work, she creates quilts in the shape of moving animals. No background, just a leaping mountain lion hung on the wall.
Joan Lintault had her Alphabet Soup quilt hanging at the show. I first discovered her work over ten years ago. She started making art quilts back when the concept hadn’t crossed anyone’s mind. I love the way she incorporates openings in her quilts so the finished product has a lacy look to it.
Ruth Powers’ pictorial quilt, Spring Encounter, also caught my eye. She had an article in a recent issue of Quilting Arts Magazine. She also has a blog where she shows her work in process.
Lastly, I want to share a link a friend sent me. This is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a long time. If you only click on one link in this post, it should be the Cochrane Community Mural Mosaics. Be sure to check out the detail on the horse’s eye. My mind spins trying to figure out how to adapt this to quilting.
